FRAME presents Screened For, a work by Elaine Whittaker created in 2015 within the exhibition «Shiver». It continues the artist’s trans-disciplinary research at the crossroads of art, science, medicine and ecology, examining humans and the forces that shape us. In research processes that still pay attention to biology and the hybridisation of the organic and inorganic, in Screened For Whittaker pauses to explore the fear of epidemics. Such phobias materialise on the bodies the artist represents in a series of digital photos, such as the one proposed by FRAME.
The installation that names the exhibition, Shiver, shaped by 2,300 petri dishes with growing salt crystals hangs from the ceiling like a beautiful chandelier. The fear of contagion, therefore, is translated into beauty. A ‘shiver’ emerges when the magnitude of fear’s power is considered, a power capable of changing the very biology of man. A shiver appears when beauty and its empathic power to provide relief and reassurance is confronted.
